Sensory integration: What is it, and why is it important for a child?

Sometimes a child may react too strongly to sounds, avoid being touched, constantly jump around or fidget, or, conversely, quickly become overwhelmed by the world around them.

This is often related to sensory integration—the process through which the brain “processes” signals from the body and the environment.

Sensory integration helps a child:

In our work with children, we use movement exercises, sensory surfaces, and games involving textures, balance, and coordination

To the child, this looks like play, but it is through these activities that important skills for everyday life are developed

At the “World of Opportunities” Inclusive Center, we select activities tailored to the unique characteristics and needs of each child
