It’s not always easy for a child to understand their own feelings or recognize another person’s emotions. Emotion cards can turn this learning process into a fun game.
Here are 5 simple exercises you can do at home:
1. “Guess the Emotion”
Show your child a card and ask, “How does this person feel?” Discuss the clues that help you figure it out.
2. “Show Me How…”
Ask your child to mimic the emotion on the card using facial expressions or gestures: show what joy, sadness, surprise, or anger looks like.
3. “When Does This Happen?”
Together, come up with a situation in which a person might feel this emotion: “When we receive a gift, we might feel happy.”
4. “Find a Pair”
Lay out the cards and ask your child to find matching emotions or group them into categories: pleasant and unpleasant feelings.
5. “And how are you feeling?”
Show a few cards and ask, “How are you feeling right now?” If the child has trouble answering in words, let them simply choose the appropriate card.
Important: Don’t label emotions as “good” or “bad.” Help your child understand that all feelings are normal, but they can be expressed in different ways.
