What Should You Do When You Feel Like Yelling at Your Child?

There are times when fatigue, stress, and constant worries build up so much that you just want to raise your voice. This is especially true when your child won’t listen, keeps repeating the same behavior, or can’t calm down for a long time.

It’s important to remember: feeling angry is normal. What matters is what we do with that emotion.

If you feel like you’re about to lose your temper:

  • Take a break. If your child is safe, step away for a few minutes to calm down.
  • Take a few slow breaths in and out. This will help reduce the emotional tension a little.
  • Name what you’re feeling: “I’m really angry right now,” “I’m tired,” “I need a minute.” Acknowledging your emotion helps you control it better.
  • Keep your words to a minimum. Instead of yelling, try briefly telling your child exactly what needs to be done.
  • Don’t expect perfection from yourself. Parenting isn’t about never getting angry or tired.

And if you do end up yelling—it doesn’t mean you’re a bad mom or dad. It’s important to acknowledge your mistake, apologize to your child, and reconnect.

Sometimes, the urge to yell stems not from “the child’s bad behavior” but from the adult’s own exhaustion. That’s why taking care of your own well-being is also part of caring for your child.

At the “World of Opportunities” Inclusive Center, we support not only children but also their parents. You don’t have to go through this journey alone.
